Chapter 22
- We have membership and baptism vows, which would fall into this category.
- Sproul 498
- It’s OK to take an oath in a courtroom.
- James says, “Let your yes be yes and your no be no. Anything else is sin.”
- Sproul 501
- Be a man or woman of your word. If you take a vow to do something, unless you find out that to fulfill your vow would require you to sin, you are obligated to fulfill your vow.
- Just clarifying that if you say, “Well I didn’t say I ‘vowed’ to do it, I just ‘promised’ to do it” — you’re not off the hook.
- There’s no expiration date of a vow. Until you’ve fulfilled it — or are released from it — you are obligated to it.
- We’re to honor God with our vows and promises.
- Elder discussion: Not sure about the last part…may have been added in a strong response to Catholicism.
