Questions

  • Ezra: The people of God were exiled because of their unfaithfulness to the God (failing to uphold their end of the covenant, disobeying his commands, etc) – in other words – they faced consequences for their disobedience to God. When bad things happen in our lives, how do we know if something is a consequence directly related to our sin/unfaithfulness, or, if it’s just the result of living in a fallen world?
  • Nehemiah: Nehemiah hurt for his people who were struggling and asked to leave a comfortable job as the king’s cupbearer to return to Judah to help rebuild the city. In what ways can we (as the people of God or individually) set aside our comfort and pursue opportunities to help the people of God who are hurting?
  • Esther: One of the major themes in all 3 of these books is God’s providence.
  • How do we make sense of God’s providence over the person who has “experienced the good things of Heaven,” “tasted the goodness of the Word of God and the power of the age to come,” etc – and falls away (see Hebrews 6) – What does is mean that it is impossible to bring that person back to repentance?
