Listener question: For context of my question, my life group is currently reading Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes, so I’ve been looking for cultural mores when I’m reading Scripture. When I read James 4, verse 2 jumped out at me and especially the first sentence. It says, “You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel…” My question is, was murder that prevalent in society that people, even Christians, had to be told not to murder, fight or quarrel, or is this figurative language where murder is used for hatred? (ref: Matthew 5: 21-22) (23:00)
