There are two primary types of soft armor: laminate and woven. Both are made of a material that is flexible and lightweight, but the woven material is much heavier. Depending on the situation, a soft armor vest may be suitable for one situation but is not appropriate for another.

It is made from fabric-like material, and comes in different shapes and sizes, including a vest. The main drawback to soft armor is its weight. If you want to use it in an emergency, it is best to make sure you keep it on a vest.
Steel and ceramic armor are two types of hard-ballistic protection (click here). The former is the cheapest, but it is also the most dangerous. Steel deflects bullets from all directions, sending shards flying at high speeds. In comparison, ceramic armor is much lighter, but it is more expensive because of its chemical complexity. Both types are effective in stopping bullets in the tile area, but they are not very durable against the projectile on the back face.
